We're Under Seige!

Our house is under attack by the neighborhood birds. Not only do we have doves and crows buzzing around the backyard, we've had a pair of swallows trying to build a nest over our back door for the last few weeks. At first, they tried doing it right over the door, which was not going to fly (no pun intended) b/c they were pooping right on the first step outside.

Then, I noticed yesterday they'd made some good progress building a nest in the corner of the patio. Also not good b/c they're too close and I feel like I'm about to get dive-bombed when I go outside. More on that later....

This morning, Isaiah let the dogs outside and then fell asleep on the couch, as is his custom. I am woken up VERY suddenly by the sound of bird smacking on glass. At first I thought some crazy bird was flying into our bedroom windows, until I realized a bird had flown down the chimney and was beating himself into a frenzy against the partially opened doors to the fireplace in our room! That sure woke me up quickly! I started hollering for Isaiah to come rescue me because I was afraid the poor thing would get out through the crack and start flying all over the house, (which would be an easy target for Tuggy) pooping and leaving feathers all over the place.

Isaiah's first groggy-brained idea is to LET the bird fly out so he can catch it. So I more reasonably suggested he shut the bedroom door -- with me, Tuggy and Murphs safely on the other side -- and use a shopping bag to get the little fella out of our room. Thankfully, my brilliant plan worked and Isaiah released our winged friend in the backyard.

Then since he was in the mood for bird extermination (okay, just eviction), he proceeded to smash the swallow nest on the backporch with a broom handle. I think it went okay, because all he said upon coming back in the house was, "Those birds are pissed!" Awww, it made me feel kind of bad for destroying their home. I considered getting a birdhouse for them, but I'd probably get some family of fat, pooping, squawking, lunatic crows take over the place instead.

Sigh....can't we just have hummingbirds come visit instead?

  2. We had the same problem with sparrows trying to build a nest on our front porch. Jonathan took care of them with a bebe gun. Good Luck, they are hard to get rid of. -Meredith

  3. Ugh, Meredith...I feel so bad even knocking their nest down, I don't think I'd have the heart to let Isaiah shoot at them! Not sure what we're going to do... It'd be too dangerous for their babies to let them nest right above the door, as Tuggy has been known to swat birds out of the air. They'd be sitting ducks!

  4. So, you know how to make it easier...instead of driving to Canyon and then to Lubbock, just find a job in Canyon!! Sounds simple, right? I wish, cuz I would love to keep your little sweet pea!
We had the same deal with birds in the fireplace in our house in NM. The first time the bird had been in there a while and had worn himself out, so it was easy for Matt to get it out (he was fine). The second time it happened the bird was full of energy and when Matt opened the doors to get it out it flew out straight into our bright front window and broke his neck! Sheesh, birds. And you know Matt would say, "JUST SHOOT 'EM!"
