Sad Trip to Washington

Sad news. Isaiah's Uncle Darrell passed away last Monday morning, a month after being sent home from the hospital with hospice care. We found out pretty early and made plans to take off the rest of the week and fly out on Tuesday. The funeral was on Wednesday and it was a small graveside service with family and friends, led by one of Darrell's great friends and former neighbor. One neat thing was that since it was a small country cemetary, they allowed a family friend to dig the hole with a backhoe and then all the guys in the family buried the casket after the service. It seemed a little strange to me at first but then I realized that's how everybody did it until recent years. I guess it's fitting for a person's family to lay them to rest, if you really think about it.

We were glad to be there and get to spend more time with family. On Thursday, we took Grandma and Grandpa for a drive up to Colville, which is 45 miles north of Loon Lake (where they live). We just wanted to get out of the house and it was a really pretty drive. We visited some of their friends (Johnny and Martha) that live there with their five dogs and two cats! I've never seen such a fun group of pups -- they had Babe (pit bull), Rosie (boxer), Max (Boston), Sassy (dachsund) and Patches (Chihuahua). Then after we drove back, we went to Deer Park to have dinner at a seafood place Grandma and Grandpa really like. It was yummy and we were all full and satisfied.

Friday evening we met our nephew Zeek, his mom Avis and her boyfriend Jim for dinner in Spokane. It was good to see them again and we picked up Zeek so he could spend the weekend "up north" with us. We also ended up attending the last part of the wedding reception of Isaiah's cousin Jill. We'd been invited to the wedding but hadn't planned on being in Spokane this weekend, so we didn't even realize it was on Friday instead of Saturday! Anyway, we got there in time to see some family and let Zeek dance to the DJ with his cousins.

Saturday morning I had to get up at 3:45 to get ready and pack my stuff to head to the airport. Needless to say with three hours of sleep, I was practically dead to the world. What woke me up was that at the check-in counter, I look over and actor/comedian Kevin Nealon is checking in next to me. He ended up being on my flight to San Francisco and was my seatmate! I loved him at the news desk on Saturday Night Live and his lines in Happy Gilmore are some of my favorites! Anyway, that was my second celeb sighting of the week, as I saw the Hudson River-landing pilot (Sully Sullenberger) at the SFO airport on my way out to Spokane. Random, huh?

Because of the funeral, we ended up missing our friends Tyler and Terra's wedding, which was sad. Isaiah and Tyler were great friends at A&M and in the same major, and Tyler had asked Isaiah to be in the wedding. We were bummed to miss it, but from the looks of the pictures of the wedding, everything was beautiful and Terra was gorgeous. Good luck to the TJs!

I might also mention that we had five house guests staying at our home this weekend. We knew we were going to be out of town, but we had told our Red Raider friends (Brooke, Heath, Becky, Don & Amy) they could stay at our house for the A&M/Tech game. Imagine our surprise when our little struggling team beat those darn Red Raiders for the first time since 2004 and the first time here in Lubbock since 1997! WHOOP! (I think it must have been the luck of two great Aggies getting married on game day, seeing as the last time we won against Tech was on Isaiah's and my wedding day almost five years ago!)

Well, it's been back to work this week for Isaiah and me both. Up next...we're gearing up to go camping this weekend with Brooke and Heath at a wildlife preserve in the Wichita Mountains of Oklahoma, which should be a lot of fun. We're hoping for relatively warm weather and no rain!
